Durian hantu merupakan tumbuhan berbentuk pohon dari famili Malvaceae (suku kapas-kapasan). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim tropis basah. Nama ilmiah Durio grandiflorus diperkenalkan oleh seorang botanis bernama Maxwell Tylden Masters pada tahun 1958. Nama spesies ini merupakan sinonim dari Boschia grandiflora.
