Buah naga merupakan tumbuhan sukulen dari famili Cactaceae (suku kaktus-kaktusan). Spesies ini memiliki kebiasaan tumbuh menempel pada batang pohon lain (epifit). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim tropis kering. Nama ilmiah Hylocereus undatus pertama kali dipublikasikan oleh botanis Adrian Hardy Haworth pada tahun 1918.
