Apel merupakan tumbuhan dari famili Rosaceae (suku mawar-mawaran). Nama ilmiah Pyrus malus diperkenalkan oleh seorang botanis bernama Carolus Linnaeus pada tahun 1753. Nama spesies ini merupakan sinonim dari Malus domestica.
