Apel adalah salah satu spesies tumbuhan dari famili Rosaceae (suku mawar-mawaran). Nama ilmiah Pyrus malus pertama kali dipublikasikan oleh botanis Carolus Linnaeus dalam Species Plantarum tahun 1753. Nama spesies ini merupakan sinonim dari Malus domestica.
