Akar aru merupakan tumbuhan perdu dari famili Combretaceae. Spesies ini memiliki kebiasaan tumbuh memanjat. Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim tropis basah. Akar aru juga dikenal dengan sebutan lain yaitu songsong arus atau sepang. Nama ilmiah Combretum tetralophum pertama kali dipublikasikan oleh botanis Charles Baron Clarke pada tahun 1878.
