Papalo merupakan tumbuhan semusim dari famili Asteraceae (suku aster-asteran). Tumbuhan yang dikenal dengan nama ilmiah Porophyllum ruderale ini berasal dari bioma beriklim tropis kering di kawasan tropis dan subtropis Amerika . Nama ilmiah Porophyllum ruderale diperkenalkan oleh seorang botanis bernama Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin pada tahun 1826.
