Pepino merupakan tumbuhan dari famili Solanaceae (suku terong-terongan). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari wilayah sepanjang Kolombia hingga Peru. Nama ilmiah Solanum muricatum diperkenalkan oleh William Aiton pada tahun 1789.
