Agrostis gigantea merupakan tumbuhan menahun dari famili Poaceae (suku rumput-rumputan). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim sedang dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari Eurasia beriklim sedang hingga Afrika barat laut. Dalam bahasa Inggris tumbuhan ini dikenal dengan sebutan redtop. Nama ilmiah Agrostis gigantea diperkenalkan oleh seorang botanis bernama Albrecht Wilhelm Roth pada tahun 1788.
