Artemisia absinthium merupakan tumbuhan menahun dari famili Asteraceae (suku aster-asteran). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim sedang dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari Eropa, Siberia, Himalaya barat, hingga Afrika utara. Dalam bahasa Inggris tumbuhan ini dikenal dengan sebutan absinthium. Nama ilmiah Artemisia absinthium pertama kali dipublikasikan oleh botanis Carolus Linnaeus dalam Species Plantarum tahun 1753.
