Artemisia absinthium merupakan tumbuhan menahun dari famili Asteraceae (suku aster-asteran). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim sedang dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari Eropa hingga Siberia dan Himalaya barat, Afrika utara. Dalam bahasa Inggris tumbuhan ini dikenal dengan sebutan absinthium. Nama ilmiah Artemisia absinthium diperkenalkan oleh Carolus Linnaeus pada tahun 1753.
