Borassus aethiopum merupakan tumbuhan berbentuk pohon dari famili Arecaceae (suku pinang-pinangan). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim tropis kering di kawasan tropis Afrika dan Afrika Selatan, Komoro, Madagaskar barat laut. Dalam bahasa Inggris tumbuhan ini dikenal dengan sebutan palmyra palm. Nama ilmiah Borassus aethiopum diperkenalkan oleh seorang botanis bernama Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius pada tahun 1838.
