Kongea merupakan tumbuhan perdu dari famili Lamiaceae (suku nilam-nilaman). Spesies ini memiliki kebiasaan tumbuh memanjat. Tumbuhan yang dikenal dengan nama ilmiah Congea tomentosa ini berasal dari bioma beriklim tropis basah dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari India hingga China (Yunnan barat daya) dan Indo-China. Nama ilmiah Congea tomentosa pertama kali dipublikasikan oleh botanis William Roxburgh pada tahun 1820.
