Pinten merupakan tumbuhan berbentuk perdu kecil dari famili Acanthaceae (suku jeruju-jerujuan) yang memiliki siklus hidup semusim (annual). Tumbuhan yang dikenal dengan nama ilmiah Dicliptera chinensis ini berasal dari bioma beriklim subtropis dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari Afghanistan timur hingga Nansei-shoto dan Indo-China. Nama ilmiah Dicliptera chinensis pertama kali dipublikasikan oleh botanis Antoine Laurent de Jussieu pada tahun 1807.
