Gardenia thunbergia merupakan tumbuhan berbentuk perdu atau pohon dari famili Rubiaceae (suku kopi-kopian). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim subtropis dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari Mozambique selatan hingga Provinsi Cape. Dalam bahasa Inggris tumbuhan ini dikenal dengan sebutan thunberg's gardenia. Nama ilmiah Gardenia thunbergia pertama kali dipublikasikan oleh botanis Carl Peter Thunberg pada tahun 1780.
