Garnotia emodi merupakan tumbuhan menahun dari famili Poaceae (suku rumput-rumputan). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim subtropis dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari Himalaya hingga Assam. Nama ilmiah Garnotia emodi pertama kali dipublikasikan oleh botanis George Arnott Walker-Arnott pada tahun 1921.
