Helleborus niger merupakan tumbuhan menahun dari famili Ranunculaceae. Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim sedang di wilayah Alpen, Appennini. Dalam bahasa Inggris tumbuhan ini dikenal dengan sebutan black hellebore. Nama ilmiah Helleborus niger diperkenalkan oleh seorang botanis bernama Carolus Linnaeus pada tahun 1753.
