Illicium verum merupakan tumbuhan berbentuk pohon dari famili Schisandraceae. Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim subtropis dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari China (selatan dan Guangxi barat) hingga Vietnam Utara. Nama ilmiah Illicium verum diperkenalkan oleh Joseph Dalton Hooker pada tahun 1888.
