muricata memiliki permukaan kasar, penuh dengan bagian-bagian yang mengeras atau meruncing
Ipomoea muricata merupakan tumbuhan berbatang basah (lunak) dari famili Convolvulaceae (suku kangkung-kangkungan). Spesies ini memiliki kebiasaan tumbuh memanjat. Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim tropis kering dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari Meksiko hingga kawasan tropis Amerika. Nama ilmiah Ipomoea muricata pertama kali dipublikasikan oleh botanis Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin pada tahun 1798.
