Tatarompetan merupakan tumbuhan semusim dari famili Convolvulaceae (suku kangkung-kangkungan). Spesies ini memiliki kebiasaan tumbuh memanjat. Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim subtropis. Nama ilmiah Ipomoea trifida diperkenalkan oleh seorang botanis bernama Carl Sigismund Kunth pada tahun 1837.
