Girang merah merupakan tumbuhan berbentuk perdu atau pohon dari famili Vitaceae (suku anggur-angguran). Tumbuhan yang dikenal dengan nama ilmiah Leea indica ini berasal dari bioma beriklim tropis basah di wilayah Kepulauan Laccadive, India selatan, Sri Lanka. Nama ilmiah Leea indica diperkenalkan oleh seorang botanis bernama Nicolaas Laurens Burman pada tahun 1919.
