Lupinus apertus merupakan tumbuhan menahun dari famili Fabaceae (suku polong-polongan). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim sedang dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari California utara-tengah hingga Nevada. Dalam bahasa Inggris tumbuhan ini dikenal dengan sebutan summit lupine. Nama ilmiah Lupinus apertus diperkenalkan oleh seorang botanis bernama Amos Arthur Heller pada tahun 1912.
