Apel adalah salah satu spesies tumbuhan berbentuk pohon dari famili Rosaceae (suku mawar-mawaran). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim sedang. Nama ilmiah Malus pumila diperkenalkan oleh seorang botanis bernama Philip Miller pada tahun 1768. Nama spesies ini merupakan sinonim dari Malus domestica.
