Malus sylvestris merupakan tumbuhan berbentuk pohon dari famili Rosaceae (suku mawar-mawaran). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim sedang dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari Eropa hingga Türkiye. Dalam bahasa Inggris tumbuhan ini dikenal dengan sebutan crab apple atau european wild apple. Nama ilmiah Malus sylvestris pertama kali dipublikasikan oleh botanis Philip Miller pada tahun 1768.
