Moluccella laevis merupakan tumbuhan semusim dari famili Lamiaceae (suku nilam-nilaman). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim subtropis dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari Asia barat hingga Turkmenistan. Dalam bahasa Inggris tumbuhan ini dikenal dengan sebutan shellflower. Nama ilmiah Moluccella laevis diperkenalkan oleh seorang botanis bernama Carolus Linnaeus pada tahun 1753.
