Moluccella spinosa merupakan tumbuhan berbentuk perdu kecil dari famili Lamiaceae (suku nilam-nilaman) yang memiliki siklus hidup semusim (annual). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim subtropis di wilayah Mediterania. Nama ilmiah Moluccella spinosa diperkenalkan oleh seorang botanis bernama Carolus Linnaeus pada tahun 1753.
