Nepeta cataria merupakan tumbuhan menahun dari famili Lamiaceae (suku nilam-nilaman). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim sedang dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari Eropa selatan hingga Jepang (Honshu tengah). Dalam bahasa Inggris tumbuhan ini dikenal dengan sebutan catnip. Nama ilmiah Nepeta cataria pertama kali dipublikasikan oleh botanis Carolus Linnaeus dalam Species Plantarum tahun 1753.
