Physalis purpurea merupakan tumbuhan dari famili Solanaceae (suku terong-terongan). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma gurun pasir atau sabana kering di wilayah Meksiko (Sonora). Nama ilmiah Physalis purpurea diperkenalkan oleh Ira Loren Wiggins pada tahun 1940.
