Kemukus merupakan tumbuhan dari famili Piperaceae (suku sirih-sirihan). Tumbuhan yang dikenal dengan nama ilmiah Piper cubeba ini berasal dari bioma beriklim tropis basah dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari Indo-China hingga kawasan Malesia. Nama ilmiah Piper cubeba pertama kali dipublikasikan oleh botanis Carl Linnaeus the Younger pada tahun 1782.
