Prunus occidentalis merupakan tumbuhan berbentuk pohon dari famili Rosaceae (suku mawar-mawaran). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim tropis basah dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari Meksiko (Chiapas), Venezuela barat laut, hingga Karibia. Dalam bahasa Inggris tumbuhan ini dikenal dengan sebutan western cherry laurel. Nama ilmiah Prunus occidentalis pertama kali dipublikasikan oleh botanis Olof Peter Swartz pada tahun 1788.
