Pterocaulon pycnostachyum merupakan tumbuhan dari famili Asteraceae (suku aster-asteran). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari Amerika Serikat bagian tenggara. Dalam bahasa Inggris tumbuhan ini dikenal dengan sebutan dense-spike blackroot. Nama ilmiah Pterocaulon pycnostachyum pertama kali dipublikasikan oleh botanis Stephen Elliott pada tahun 1823.
