Setaria tenacissima merupakan tumbuhan semusim dari famili Poaceae (suku rumput-rumputan). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim tropis kering dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari Meksiko (Guerrero, Chiapas), hingga kawasan tropis Amerika. Dalam bahasa Inggris tumbuhan ini dikenal dengan sebutan tropical bristlegrass. Nama ilmiah Setaria tenacissima diperkenalkan oleh seorang botanis bernama Heinrich Adolph Schrader pada tahun 1824.
