Jombang adalah salah satu spesies tumbuhan semusim dari famili Asteraceae (suku aster-asteran). Tumbuhan yang dikenal dengan nama ilmiah Sonchus asper ini berasal dari bioma beriklim sedang dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari Eurasia beriklim sedang, Afrika utara, Sahel, hingga Somalia. Nama ilmiah Sonchus asper pertama kali dipublikasikan oleh botanis John Hill pada tahun 1769.
