Sphaeranthus africanus merupakan tumbuhan semusim dari famili Asteraceae (suku aster-asteran). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim tropis kering. Di Indonesia tumbuhan ini dikenal dengan nama sembung, ki heuleut (Sunda), atau brincil (Jawa). Nama ilmiah Sphaeranthus africanus diperkenalkan oleh seorang botanis bernama Carolus Linnaeus pada tahun 1763.
