Themeda triandra merupakan tumbuhan menahun dari famili Poaceae (suku rumput-rumputan). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim tropis kering dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari Afrika, wilayah Asia tropis, subtropis, hingga Australia. Di Indonesia tumbuhan ini dikenal dengan nama merakan lanang (Jawa). Nama ilmiah Themeda triandra pertama kali dipublikasikan oleh botanis Peter Forsskål pada tahun 1775.
