Thymus praecox merupakan tumbuhan perdu kecil dari famili Lamiaceae (suku nilam-nilaman). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim sedang dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari Greenland, Eropa hingga Türkiye. Dalam bahasa Inggris tumbuhan ini dikenal dengan sebutan mother of thyme. Nama ilmiah Thymus praecox diperkenalkan oleh seorang botanis bernama Philipp Maximilian Opiz pada tahun 1824.
