Vriesea macrostachya merupakan tumbuhan epifit dari famili Bromeliaceae (suku nanas-nanasan). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim tropis basah. Dalam bahasa Inggris tumbuhan ini dikenal dengan sebutan parasita. Nama ilmiah Vriesea macrostachya pertama kali dipublikasikan oleh botanis Domingo Bello y Espinosa pada tahun 1896.
