Ginseng india adalah salah satu spesies tumbuhan perdu atau perdu kecil dari famili Solanaceae (suku terong-terongan). Tumbuhan yang dikenal dengan nama ilmiah Withania somnifera ini berasal dari bioma beriklim subtropis dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari Eropa selatan hingga China bagian tengah, Afrika hingga Myanmar. Ginseng india juga dikenal dengan sebutan lain yaitu aswaganda. Nama ilmiah Withania somnifera diperkenalkan oleh Michel Félix Dunal pada tahun 1852.
