Temu kunci merupakan tumbuhan dari famili Zingiberaceae (suku temu-temuan). Spesies ini memiliki kebiasaan membentuk akar rimpang. Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim tropis basah. Nama ilmiah Boesenbergia pandurata pertama kali dipublikasikan oleh botanis William Roxburgh pada tahun 1913. Nama spesies ini merupakan sinonim dari Boesenbergia rotunda.
