Kunyit adalah salah satu spesies tumbuhan dari famili Zingiberaceae (suku temu-temuan). Spesies ini memiliki kebiasaan membentuk akar rimpang. Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim tropis basah. Nama ilmiah Curcuma domestica diperkenalkan oleh Theodoric Valeton pada tahun 1918. Nama ini merupakan sinonim dari Curcuma longa.
