Bunga balon merupakan tumbuhan menahun dari famili Campanulaceae. Tumbuhan yang dikenal dengan nama ilmiah Platycodon grandiflorus ini berasal dari bioma beriklim sedang dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari Siberia tenggara hingga Jepang dan China. Di Indonesia bunga balon memiliki beberapa nama, antara lain ada yang menyebutnya bunga lonceng cina, atau bunga lonceng jepang. Nama ilmiah Platycodon grandiflorus pertama kali dipublikasikan oleh botanis Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin pada tahun 1830.
