Atriplex hortensis merupakan tumbuhan semusim dari famili Amaranthaceae (suku bayam-bayaman). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim sedang dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari Kaukasia hingga Asia tengah. Dalam bahasa Inggris tumbuhan ini dikenal dengan sebutan garden orache. Nama ilmiah Atriplex hortensis diperkenalkan oleh seorang botanis bernama Carolus Linnaeus pada tahun 1753.
