Gomphrena macrocephala merupakan tumbuhan menahun dari famili Amaranthaceae (suku bayam-bayaman). Spesies ini memiliki kebiasaan membentuk bonggol berbentuk umbi. Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim tropis kering dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari Brazil hingga Paraguay. Nama ilmiah Gomphrena macrocephala diperkenalkan oleh seorang botanis bernama Augustin Saint-Hilaire pada tahun 1825.
