Hyptis atrorubens merupakan tumbuhan perdu kecil dari famili Lamiaceae (suku nilam-nilaman). Spesies ini memiliki kebiasaan tumbuh pada genangan air (helofit). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim tropis basah dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari Meksiko tengah hingga kawasan tropis Amerika. Dalam bahasa Inggris tumbuhan ini dikenal dengan sebutan marubio oscuro. Nama ilmiah Hyptis atrorubens diperkenalkan oleh seorang botanis bernama Pierre Antoine Poiteau pada tahun 1806.
