Serut merupakan tumbuhan berbentuk pohon dari famili Malpighiaceae. Tumbuhan yang dikenal dengan nama ilmiah Malpighia coccigera ini berasal dari bioma beriklim tropis basah di wilayah Karibia. Nama ilmiah Malpighia coccigera pertama kali dipublikasikan oleh botanis Carolus Linnaeus dalam Species Plantarum tahun 1762.
