Menta merupakan tumbuhan menahun dari famili Lamiaceae (suku nilam-nilaman). Tumbuhan yang dikenal dengan nama ilmiah Mentha × piperita ini berasal dari bioma beriklim sedang dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari Eropa hingga Asia tengah. Nama ilmiah Mentha × piperita diperkenalkan oleh seorang botanis bernama Carolus Linnaeus pada tahun 1753.
