Piper capense merupakan tumbuhan perdu atau pohon dari famili Piperaceae (suku sirih-sirihan). Spesies ini memiliki kebiasaan tumbuh menjalar. Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim tropis basah di kawasan tropis Afrika dan Afrika Selatan, Komoro, Madagaskar. Nama ilmiah Piper capense pertama kali dipublikasikan oleh botanis Carl Linnaeus the Younger pada tahun 1782.
