Piper ponapense merupakan tumbuhan dari famili Piperaceae (suku sirih-sirihan). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim tropis basah di wilayah Kepulauan Caroline. Dalam bahasa Inggris tumbuhan ini dikenal dengan sebutan pepper. Nama ilmiah Piper ponapense pertama kali dipublikasikan oleh botanis Anne Casimir Pyrame de Candolle pada tahun 1921.
