Rhamnus utilis merupakan tumbuhan berbentuk perdu atau pohon dari famili Rhamnaceae. Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim sedang dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari Rusia Timur Jauh hingga Vietnam Utara dan Korea. Dalam bahasa Inggris tumbuhan ini dikenal dengan sebutan chinese buckthorn. Nama ilmiah Rhamnus utilis diperkenalkan oleh Joseph Decaisne pada tahun 1857.
