Sambucus nigra merupakan tumbuhan berbentuk perdu atau pohon dari famili Viburnaceae. Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim sedang dengan rentang sebaran mulai dari Azores, Eropa, hingga Iran barat. Dalam bahasa Inggris tumbuhan ini dikenal dengan sebutan black elderberry. Nama ilmiah Sambucus nigra pertama kali dipublikasikan oleh botanis Carolus Linnaeus dalam Species Plantarum tahun 1753.
