Wijen adalah salah satu spesies tumbuhan dari famili Pedaliaceae. Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim tropis kering. Nama ilmiah Sesamum orientale diperkenalkan oleh seorang botanis bernama Carolus Linnaeus pada tahun 1753. Nama spesies ini merupakan sinonim dari Sesamum indicum.
