Arctium lappa merupakan tumbuhan menahun dari famili Asteraceae (suku aster-asteran). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim sedang di wilayah Eurasia beriklim sedang. Dalam bahasa Inggris tumbuhan ini dikenal dengan sebutan greater burdock. Nama ilmiah Arctium lappa diperkenalkan oleh Carolus Linnaeus pada tahun 1753.
