Sorghum bicolor merupakan tumbuhan semusim atau menahun dari famili Poaceae (suku rumput-rumputan). Tumbuhan ini berasal dari bioma beriklim tropis kering di wilayah Afrika, anak benua India. Di Indonesia tumbuhan ini dikenal dengan nama cantel atau jagung cantel. Nama ilmiah Sorghum bicolor diperkenalkan oleh seorang botanis bernama Conrad Moench pada tahun 1794.
